Spring Lawn Care Checklist

Spring is the perfect time to give your lawn the care and attention it needs to thrive all year. In Central Arkansas, where warm-season grasses like Bermuda and Zoysia dominate, taking the right steps in early spring sets the stage for a lush, healthy lawn. At Lazer Treatment Division, we’ve put together a handy spring lawn care checklist to help you get your yard off to a strong start.

The Lazer Checklist:

1. Clear Debris & Inspect Your Lawn

Before you start any treatments, walk your lawn to check for winter damage and clear away leaves, branches, and debris. Pay close attention to any bare spots or areas that look unhealthy.

Why It’s Important: Removing debris allows sunlight, water, and nutrients to reach the grass, promoting healthy growth. It also makes it easier to spot issues like pests or disease early.

2. Test & Balance Soil pH

Healthy soil is the foundation of a thriving lawn. Bermuda and Zoysia prefer slightly acidic soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. If your soil’s pH is out of balance, your grass may struggle to absorb nutrients.

What to Do:

  • Get a professional soil test.

  • Apply lime if the soil is too acidic, or sulfur if it’s too alkaline.

  • Adjust your fertilization plan based on the test results.

3. Apply Pre-Emergent Weed Control

Spring is prime time for weed prevention. Applying a pre-emergent herbicide stops common weeds like crabgrass and broadleaf weeds before they have a chance to sprout.

Timing Tip: Apply pre-emergent herbicide when soil temperatures consistently reach 55°F—usually around late February to early March in Central Arkansas.

4. Fertilize to Jumpstart Growth

Your lawn is waking up from winter dormancy and needs a boost to green up and grow strong. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to promote healthy roots and early growth.

Pro Tip: Avoid over-fertilizing, which can lead to excessive growth and make your lawn more susceptible to disease.

5. Aerate & Overseed if Necessary

If your lawn has bare spots or areas of compacted soil, spring is a great time for core aeration and overseeding. Aeration helps reduce compaction and allows nutrients and water to penetrate deeper into the soil.

For Overseeding: Focus on bare or thin areas, but remember that warm-season grasses like Bermuda and Zoysia establish best in late spring or early summer when temperatures are consistently warm.

6. Address Lawn Pests Early

Pests like grubs and armyworms can damage your lawn if left unchecked. Keep an eye out for signs of infestation, such as brown patches or grass that pulls up easily.

What to Do: Apply a preventative treatment or contact a professional if you suspect a pest problem.

7. Check Your Irrigation System

Make sure your sprinkler system is in good working order before the heat of summer arrives. Test each zone and adjust the schedule to ensure even coverage.

Watering Tip: Bermuda and Zoysia lawns need about 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week, including rainfall.
